Understanding California Chain Controls

Always follow the restriction displayed by Caltrans and roadside personnel. Requirements can change quickly as snowfall, pavement and traffic conditions change.

R-0

No current chain restriction. Continue watching for snow, ice and rapidly changing conditions.

R-1

Chains are generally required except for qualifying vehicles equipped with snow tires. Follow the official posted requirement.

R-2

Chains or traction devices are required except on qualifying four-wheel/all-wheel-drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. Those vehicles must carry traction devices.

R-3

Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, with no exceptions. Roads may close before or during severe conditions.

Lake Tahoe Road Conditions FAQ

Where can I find official Lake Tahoe road conditions?

Use Caltrans QuickMap for California highways, Nevada 511 for Nevada roads and the National Weather Service Reno office for Tahoe weather alerts.

Do four-wheel-drive vehicles need to carry chains?

During California R-2 controls, qualifying four-wheel/all-wheel-drive vehicles with snow-tread tires may be exempt from installing traction devices, but they must still carry them. Always follow the restriction currently posted.

Which highway reaches South Lake Tahoe from Sacramento?

US 50 crosses Echo Summit before reaching the South Lake Tahoe area. Interstate 80 provides access toward Truckee and the North Shore.

Can Highway 89 near Emerald Bay close in winter?

That West Shore segment can be affected by winter weather and seasonal closures. Verify its current status through Caltrans before using it as an around-the-lake route.

Is this map showing live road status?

No. The interactive map explains routes and directs visitors to official live sources. It does not independently declare a road open, closed or under chain control.

Emergency conditions take priority over trip plans. Obey law enforcement, transportation personnel, road closures and evacuation orders. Do not rely on this page as your only safety source.
